After that, Fink usually appeared for performance dressed in surgical scrubs and mask. In the live performances around that time before the Dirty Mind album, Matt wore a costume of a jailbird. The recording has sold over 18 million copies since its release. Fink.Minneapolis, Hennepin County, United States of America “If we have to change the name,” he quipped, “we’ll just call it Dr. Recently, a different, apparently pre-existing band named Fink contacted WLM to protest this band borrowing its name. But getting it out across the world through the Internet and connecting with other people who are thinking in that same way, I find that really fascinating.”įarmer Joe & the Ignorant Corpses has a four-song EP in the can that will be released by WLM over the summer, but this is Fink’s time to shine. “It’s not going to be popular,” Himlin said. Himlin and Speese agreed that the avant-garde band combines elements of Pink Floyd cofounder Syd Barrett and punk rockers Iggy Pop and Julian Cope. When Speese talks about his alter ego Fink, he sometimes gets confused as to whether he should refer to himself/Fink in the first, third or, if such a thing is possible, fourth person.įor example, he offered this explanation of how Fink, the band, came to have its own recording: “The Fink album, the way it worked out, was Fink, me, I was the singer the entire time, so I created the songs in terms of, well, the music was all made up by the three of us on the spot, but lyrically or wherever the songs flowed was sort of pushed by me, or Fink.” And several years ago, a DJ at Dandelion Radio, a UK Internet station that scouts for underground music, discovered these songs and started playing them on the air, which ultimately led to Himlin landing a publishing deal with WLM.Īs for the songs, they’re just streams of consciousness, with instruments passed randomly from one member to the other from one song to the next.Īnd to explain away the nonsensical lyrics, Speese offered, “These songs make sense to me in a way that the world doesn’t.” Over time, Himlin started posting songs online that were culled from their jam sessions. We did this purely for our own amusement.” We started recording those things and making, for just our own consumption, mock albums, and we gave ourselves alternate identities. The eight-song Fink album, available at, came to be through years of informal gatherings of old friends from the circa-1990s Other Band, some of whom may or may not have been under the influence of one too many glasses of wine at times.īand member and album producer Don Himlin put it this way: “A long time ago, when we were kids and we were playing music in the local scene, we used to do this thing when we would rehearse where, if somebody was late or whatever, we would just make stuff up and be silly. Speese takes the former accomplishment seriously the latter, not so much. Jim Speese.Ī couple of weeks ago, the singer-songwriter completed his dissertation to earn his doctorate in English from Lehigh University, and on Monday, his namesake (sort of) band, Fink, released its debut album, “Square Eggs,” on UK-based White Label Music. These are heady times for Jim Speese of the local band Cloud Party.
